At Charlton Horethorne Primary School, we value each child as an individual with a unique potential for learning. Our aim is to enable each child, regardless of need, to participate fully in current and future society as a responsible, self-confident learner. We believe that an effective curriculum offers knowledge, skills, understanding and progression. At our school, the curriculum is ambitious as it enriches and enlivens the standards set out in the National Curriculum.
Our curriculum covers all the areas of study in the National Curriculum including Religious Education. We have taken all the National Curriculum subjects and combined them in a two year rolling programme of cross-curricular topics. Our planning and teaching of the curriculum is supported by the Cornerstones Approach.
Each topic has a main theme such as Off with her Head! which looks at Tudor times in our country and beyond. Within this topic we allow children to develop knowledge in a range of curriculum areas and also develop the wisdom to use skills taught in their everyday life.
Our topics are differentiated, acknowledging the different ability levels of our students. Each topic also contains challenges which extend the learning and allow the children to apply their knowledge into new areas. We use these challenges to assess the student’s understanding of a subject. Please see below for our current curriculum rolling programme.
2 Year Rolling Programme- Updated Sept 20We use this to then produce detailed medium term plans for each class that show coverage across the curriculum. These are shared with our parents via an information leaflet. Examples of both can be seen below.
